Varicose Veins Q & A
What are varicose veins?
Your veins are the blood vessels that carry blood back toward your heart, where it can receive more oxygen before circulating back through your body via your arteries.
Your veins have valves that help push the blood forward against gravity and stop it from flowing backward (i.e., retrograde flow). When your peripheral veins (i.e., the veins in your legs) are healthy, they easily push blood all the way from your feet toward your heart.
If your valves wear out over time or get injured, they can’t push the blood up properly. Instead, the valves allow blood to flow backward and pool in the area of the vein behind the valve. That portion of the vein swells up and twists, causing varicose veins.
Why do I have varicose veins?
You’re more likely to have varicose veins if someone in your family had them, too. Also, being overweight or pregnant increases the pressure on your legs and raises your risk for varicose veins.
Women who’ve undergone multiple pregnancies and births are more likely to develop varicose veins, as are people who stand for long periods of time. The valves in your veins also wear out over time, so you tend to develop varicose veins as you get older.
Are varicose veins just a cosmetic problem?
Varicose veins are more than an aesthetic issue. Because they’re actually broken, dysfunctional veins, they can cause a range of symptoms that could worsen if not treated, including:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Fatigue
- Skin discoloration
- Other skin changes
- Eczema
- Thick, leathery skin
Untreated, severe varicose veins can even cause leg ulcers or bleeding.
How do doctors treat varicose veins?
Dr. Nackman first conducts a thorough and comprehensive examination of your legs and takes a complete medical history. He then creates a roadmap of your veins with ultrasound diagnostic imaging to identify faulty valves. Based on his findings, FDA-approved treatments he may recommend to close, and collapse veins include:
- Venefit® —minimally invasive radiofrequency energy
- Varithena® —injectable foam
- Asclera® — injectable polidocanol
He may recommend minimally invasive microphlebectomy to remove residual varicose veins, once the main veins are closed. Once the dysfunctional veins are removed, your blood reroutes itself to healthier veins for improved circulation.
